Squint, 2023
Crocheted Recycled Materials, 3 x 5 feet (approx.)
Artist’s have a tendency to collect/hoard materials, no matter their state or intended use. While creating the previous pieces for the BFA exhibition, I understood I was very complicit in the waste and environmental destruction I was researching and attempting to highlight. I had an abundance of materials that had no real purpose and would otherwise have been thrown out. Instead, every paper/fabric-like material was cut into yarn-like strips and crocheted to create Squint. Although my color choice was limited by the materials I already owned, the pattern was designed to emulate a very distant, abstract landscape. People are so often viewing landscapes very distantly, through a window, in a photograph, or through the distraction of billboards, road signs, and litter. Squint is the landscape from a distant view created by materials that could have ended up in nature by means of a landfill.
